Standard Steel required their workers to complete routine cleaning and maintenance by safely accessing heavy forging press machines from underneath the system. The background
Standard Steel are the only manufacturer of forced steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives, and passenger railcars in North America. From their headquarters in Pennsylvania, USA, they produce steel wheels using 10,000-ton forging press machines.
The challenge
Standard Steel routinely conducts cleaning and maintenance underneath their pressing machines within a press bit. The press bit is designed with access underneath via a permanent maintenance ladder, the team at Standard Steel required a secondary solution for access and retrieval to ensure the correct fall arrest protection is provided when personnel are underneath the machines conducting maintenance.
With multiple press machines and ladders onsite, the solution was required to be lightweight and easily transportable for each job. The team at Standard Steel got in touch with REID Lifting’s distribution partner, Mazzella Lifting, for a suitable solution that could provide safe access.
The SOLUTION
Mazzella Lifting provided Standard Steel with a versatile and portable solution for access and retrieval scenarios across various areas of their site by recommending REID’s winched TDAVIT. With a maximum lifting capacity of 600kg, the TDAVIT is a two-piece system crafted from lightweight and durable aluminum. The absence of any tools required for assembly meant that just two people could assemble the system with ease, making it a portable and practical solution.
In addition, the TDAVIT comes equipped with a double shackle head for attachment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and can also be used for attachment of a lifting device if required. This feature further adds to the system's versatility, making it an impressive addition to any worksite. The system comes with a carry bag, making it easy to store when not in use, ensuring it can be quickly deployed whenever required.
